Doodler's Corner - Karin Söderquist

This week I can't quite believe that I've got one of my favourite illustrators in Doodler's Corner, Karin Söderquist!!!

Who are you, where do you come from and what do you do?

My name is Karin Söderquist.  I grew up in Sweden but for the past few years I've made London my home. I recently graduated from Camberwell College of Arts where I studied illustration. I make 3D illustration and collages.

Who/what influences what you create?

It can be anything really: music, art, movies, everyday things, over heard conversations etc. I'm often inspired by historical events, tragic life stories and fairy tales. I enjoy things that are slightly melodramatic and over the top.

How do you decide on a subject for an illustration?

It's hard to say. Sometimes I just get an idea that I like and sometimes it's takes hours and hours of research to come up with something. I usually have some kind of starting point, a theme, a colour combination or a quote.

What's been the most exciting thing that's happened in your career so far?

My career is still pretty fresh, I graduated from University this summer. But the most exciting things that's happened so far was the first time I had my work published. It was in The Tote Bag, a book by Jitesh Patel published by Lawrence King.

What made you choose illustration as an outlet for your creativity?

I've always enjoyed drawing and a making things. I spent a lot of time in Sweden painting. My work has always been very clear and illustrative so when it came to picking a professional direction to take my work in the choice seemed obvious.

If you weren't an illustrator what job would you love to do?

I think I would be a documentary maker, filming animals in some distant location.

You find a magic lamp with a genie inside, he offers you three wishes. What do you wish for?

The ability too fly, being able to travel in time, and something nice, like eternal happiness for everyone.

Whose work do you admire and want to adorn your walls?

Jockum Nordström, Tove Jansson and Louis Wain decorate the walls in my flat. I also really like Pippilotti Rist, I can't wait to see her London exhibition.

What’s the best thing about doing what you do?

It's fun! Nothing beats the feeling of completing an illustration/work of art that you're really happy with.

What does the future hold for your work?

I've only just started out as a freelance illustrator and hopefully there will be loads of fun projects coming my way. Right now I'm doing some new 3D work, but I can't tell you what it's for yet.

Huge thanks to Karin for taking part....I'm completely in love with the dachschund and the animal band!! You can have a mooch through Karin's portfolio, see some more 3D work and visit her shop here : http://karinsoderquist.com/
